I was immediately drawn to the expression on this woman’s face. There was something so pure in her joy, something so hopeful. I began to see her as a sunflower—turning her face toward the light.

​

I created Hope Springs Eternal during a volatile political period and a turbulent time in our country. It was my homage to the stubborn persistence of hope. There are moments when the darkness can feel overwhelming, when we begin to wonder whether the sun is ever going to shine again.

​

And then, somehow, another flower appears.

​

Maybe hope is like that. It doesn’t require us to pretend the darkness isn’t there. It simply asks us to keep believing there is still light somewhere—and to keep turning toward it.
