Rev. Garrett A. Foster
Interfaith Minister, Life-Cycle Celebrant,
Writer, Teacher, Community Builder

Garrett A. Foster is the founder of From the Heart ministries, which includes Ceremonies by Garrett and Community In Spirit. His personal mission is to spread love in the world and empower others through writing, prayer, teaching, community, art, sacred activism and ceremony; and to support the work of others who share their hearts in their own way.

Bullied as a child for being gay and feeling like he did not belong in any community or to any faith tradition, Garrett learned to be just as critical of himself as the rest of the world could be at times. The love he somehow knew was at his core was buried under depression, anxiety, OCD tendencies, perfectionism and more.

A second cancer diagnosis at age 52 changed his life. It became his greatest gift and teacher. Along with immense gratitude, unconditional forgiveness and connecting with others in community, the uncertainty of facing cancer helped him to discover the kind of love he has committed to sharing with others. Various mystical experiences have provided glimpses of what lies beyond this physical world, and have taught him to live and love in a way he never dreamed possible.

Garrett’s journey led him to become an Interfaith Minister. He is also a certified Life-Cycle Celebrant, prayer chaplain, inter-spiritual counselor, and the founder of the online Spiritual Writers Academy and also Community In Spirit where many have experienced and shared deep love and learning.

Previously he was an Emmy Award–winning writer for the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light; and a senior editor for magazines and major metro newspapers. A graduate of Vassar College, he is the author of the novel, The Accident of Being Human. His latest, The Weight of Faith, will be published in 2020.

Garrett’s motto is: “Love what you do — and love will follow.”
